Backyard Birds...

Lately, we've been getting lots and lots of Pine Siskins. They love those white sock type feeders that hold thistle seed.
All winter we've been getting lots of Chicadees, Nuthatches, Purple Finches, Common Redpolls and American Goldfinches. I took these photos through the kitchen window. We have a few more feeders that aren't quite as close to the house, but we can still enjoy them feeding. If you look down on the ground by the gate, they are scattered underneath searching every square inch to secure some thistle.

We keep a bird book on the kitchen table marked with all the birds we've been seeing and so the boys can look them up and learn more. It's been so much fun. I remember doing a lot of this growing up...my parents loved to feed these winter guests in our U.P. backyard.
Robert wants to place an orange out on the fence so we might draw a Baltimore Oriole...we told him that we will beginning in April when they are most likely to come around. I'm still waiting for a Cardinal or Evening Grosbeaks.

This squirrel is named "Nutty." He's been visiting, too, for many winters. The kids are convinced it's the same squirrel.

This is a photo of Robert going to church this morning by himself (carrying some canned goods for St. Vincent dePaul) because the rest of his family went last night while he was at a friend's house. He goes by himself happily and sits by his friend, Ann.

Happy Sunday...hope you are enjoying some warmth and sunshine.

laura, what kind of feed do you put out for chickadees? It seems like our birds have disappeared on me this winter. i think I need a shakeup in the food department!

I put oranges out every spring for the orioles, and now and then they stop by. I've found that the house finches (esp babies) in our neighborhood enjoy the oranges the most. Unfortunately, I haven't been keeping up our thistle feeder this winter...seeds of any kind seem to attrack those nasty voles! I keep a bird book handy too, and you'd be surprised just how many of 'em Samedh can identify already:)
