Making Syrup...

(you can click on the collage to see photo's bigger)
It's quite the production and a lot of work. Our friends, Lew & Kathy ("Opa" & Aunt Kathy) graciously let us "help" with the syrup making process. There is so much that goes into it and lots of hard work. Tim and the kids especially LOVE collecting the sap and building the big fire to boil the sap. It has to evaporate...which is slow and takes a long time. Honestly, there are many steps and lots of work in putting it together...for example, straining the sap to get any little bugs out, hauling/lugging the jugs up and down hills in and out of the woods, cleaning/preparing the jars, watching and waiting for the sap to evaporate, etc....a job certainly not for the person who is not able/willing to work hard.
We are grateful that Lew & Kathy let us take part in the process. It is fun, educational and great exercise!
